Automated Duty Hours Using GPS

The problem

Compliance with resident duty hours is a major requirement of every residency program. We are asked to retrospectively log our hours worked, which is flawed because
1. We often don't remember what hours we worked
2. We do not have the patience to log accurately
3. We are discouraged from truthfully logging violations

This is a simple solution to the problem of duty hour logging with much more accurate results.

The solution

I set up my iPhone using the IFTTT app with iOS location services to log when I enter and leave the hospital for a ten-week span. I did nothing to maintain the logging over that time.

The Results

The app was able to detect 89% of events (missed 8 arrivals at work and 2 departures), but the hours on these days were interpolated with satisfactory results.
